This is the makeover story of a meticulous owner and lover of things well-done. Once his house was completely renovated, he decided to tackle the custom makeover of his garage. Right off the bat, it must be said that his garage is tiny. After expanding a basement bedroom for one of his children, the garage was cut in size by half. In addition, in order to make room for the bedroom, the furnace, air exchanger and humidifier were moved into the garage, further shrinking the space.
Aware that at best he could now only park a mini vehicle, the owner asked us to maximize the storage space using literally every inch available.
Maximizing the storage space represented a significant challenge. What made it easier was that we knew we could count on clear and detailed direction from our client. The installation of new lighting and a new garage door motor was handled by the owner, so our first step was to bring in our experience painting crew who set out to repair the walls and ceiling and repaint the garage. We also installed an MDF baseboard around the perimeter to accommodate a new Espazzo floor covering for a stylish, but practical look. Once this was complete, we were able to begin the installation of all the components for storage. These included custom storage cabinets with a workbench and caster wheels so they could be moved around. On every inch of the walls we installed PVC slatwall panels with a variety of hooks, racks, baskets and shelves to increase the vertical storage of a variety of items. From an aesthetic point of view, the client chose to match the colour of the walls and ceiling with the panels which also worked well with the floor colour. Some items such as a hose reel, a small overhead storage rack and a pair of ceiling supports to hold an aluminum ladder were also provided resulting in a very successful, unique makeover, confirming the old adage: “Good things come in small packages.”
